The lifeboat station in Amble has been a key part of the town since 1842. The RNLI station is situated on the Radcliffe Quay in Amble and is housed in purpose built premises to the west of the harbour area which opened in 1986.

Amble RNLI station has two lifeboats – the new Shannon Class 'Elizabeth and Leonard and Amble's second lifeboat,
the ‘D Class’ Inshore Lifeboat (or ILB),  the ‘Mildred Holcroft ’.

The D class has been the workhorse      of the RNLI for over 40 years. It is small and highly manoeuvrable, making it ideal for rescues close to shore in fair to moderate conditions. It has a single outboard engine and can be righted manually by the crew    following any capsize. The design of the D class has continued to evolve since its introduction in 1963.

Amble Lifeboat Station is fortunate to have a very active fundraising committee in Amble Lifeboat Fundraisers or ALF which is made up from a broad cross section of townspeople and also includes many crewmembers’ wives. They raise in excess of £10,000 every year by organising and running functions and their Harbour Day takes place every August Bank Holiday Sunday is by far the most important day in Amble’s year.

Amble currently has 24 crew members at their Lifeboat station and one full time mechanic. All are volunteers and come from many backgrounds - some are fishermen but there are also electricians, joiners and civil servants. Every member is on call every minute of every day or night regardless of weather conditions.

The station also has a Lifeboat Operations Manager (LOM), who is responsible for authorising the launching of the boats and is their contact with most of the outside media and with Lifeboat Headquarters in Poole, Dorset. He is supported by two Deputy Launching Authorities who take over his duties when he is absent from the station. If medical advice is required the Amble station can call on the assistance of their Honorary Medical Advisor who is a local GP – Dr Long. Everyone concerned with the Amble RNLI station is of equal importance and is required to give total commitment to the RNLI. If their pager activates, each crewmember is expected to do his or her utmost to respond. All Station personnel carry an electronic pager (even to bed) as they never know when they will receive a shout.

Amble RNLI welcomes group visits as well as individual and occasional visitors.  Please contact John Young, Visitor Liaison to make the necessary arrangements on (01665) 712916.
